Why Hannah Doesn’t Sleep

Okay, so maybe that’s not the real reason…It was just a good excuse to post a cute picture. ;)

The real reason is yet another “big girl” milestone…  We have officially given up the afternoon nap, and transitioned to something we are (rather erroneously) calling “quiet time.”  (Of course, I reserve the right to reinstitute naptime when it is needed!)  The idea is that she does not have to sleep…she has to stay in her room and play – quietly – for a designated amount of time.  (As this is still fairly new to all of us, the timeframe is still being adjusted.)  She is thoroughly enjoying the play time…it’s the quiet part that she is having a little difficulty grasping.  But, that will come…right?  At least it seems to be working wonders on the bedtime routine!  (She now falls asleep within 10-15 minutes of going to bed…as opposed to the hour/hour and a half of singing, playing, and “stalling” that we were dealing with before!)

Of course, today is an exception.  I left her in her room playing with some puzzles, but then I noticed that it was extremely quiet.  (I know that’s the idea, right?!)  So, I peeked in on her, and found her curled up in bed, sound asleep!  No, I don’t think we got rid of the naps too soon.  I think it is a result of a cold that seems to be hanging on pretty tightly (going on 3 weeks now!).  I thought she was getting better, but I may have been wrong.  This afternoon, after lunch, she felt a little warm, and was acting very sleepy.  So, I checked her temperature…101.  She has a doctor’s appointment on Monday morning.  (This whole thing is just a little too reminiscent of the whole bronchitis/pneumonia episode earlier this year!)
