This morning Hannah and I stayed home from church. She is doing much better, so maybe I was just being over-protective, but I want to make sure she is fully healthy before we head back to the nursery – both for her sake, and for the sake of the other kids.Â
At first, I was very disappointed at the prospect of staying home. Jason taught our Sunday school class this morning, and started a series on the Life of Christ. Both of which I was very excited about, and very sad to miss! I always enjoy hearing him teach, and this was a topic I was definitely looking forward to. But, he will be teaching for the next 2 weeks as well, so (Lord-willing) I will be able to be there for those.
But, this morning, I got to be the Sunday School teacher! It has been a long time since I have taught Sunday School (or Awana, or anything…), and I forgot how much fun it could be!Â
We started out singing a few of Hannah’s favorite songs…“Jesus Loves Me,†“The Whole World,†“Jesus Loves the Little Children,†and “Father Abraham.â€Â (That one is relatively new, and she loves it!) Then we read the story of Moses from her Toddler Bible. (I try to read a few of the stories with her each day, but we have missed most of this week.) This particular children’s Bible tends to jump around quite a bit, and leaves out bits and pieces (probably to accommodate a toddler’s short attention span!), so I try to combine stories about a common event or character into one…and fill in the missing pieces as we go. Hannah has a great attention span for an almost-two-year-old, so this usually works out well…Sometimes she thinks the stories are too short, and asks for more! I had only planned to read the stories about baby Moses, but Hannah wanted to keep going, so we also read about Moses as an adult (covering the burning bush, the plagues (Hannah loved the frogs!), the pillar of cloud and fire, the parting of the Red Sea, the manna, the 10 commandments, and the golden calf).  Isn’t it wonderful that even when put in a (very) simplistic “children’s version†God’s sovereign care and provision for His people can be clearly seen!?Â
Of course, our little Sunday School experience would not have been complete without snack time – juice and goldfish crackers…which, incidentally is the only part of the nursery that she actually likes!! I hope she liked more than that today. And, although I am looking forward to being back at church next week (even if she isn’t), I thought it was a great morning!
