Hannah Elisabeth, Life, Mommyhood

A Long Week

About a week ago, I began thinking that Hannah was either hitting a growth spurt, or getting sick.  I was praying for the growth spurt…  But, I feel like I have been waiting, or anticipating the oncoming cold, flu, or whatever it may be, to arrive.  Well, it finally did – and with a vengance I might add!

She woke up around 1:30 a.m. on Monday night/Tuesday morning and had thrown up in her crib…  So, Jason put her in the bathtub while I set about cleaning up the mess.  We let her watch Elmo’s World to help her calm her down before getting back in bed…  Well that turned into 5 hours of throwing up every half hour, more baths, perpetual laundry cycles, 3 episodes of Elmo’s World, 4 episodes of Winnie the Pooh, and half of Pooh’s Grand Adventure before she was calmed down, clean, and (we hoped) done throwing up. (I apologize if that was too much information…) We got her, and us, back into bed around 5:00 a.m.  Of course, she woke up at 7:30.  I don’t know how she does it!

The “Husband/Daddy of the Year” award definitely goes to Jason!!  I do not know how I would have gotten through it without him!  He stayed home from work on Tuesday to help me take care of the little one.  He held and comforted her, gave baths, cleaned up “messes,” let me run to the store, and watched numerous episodes of Elmo and Winnie the Pooh.

It was just so sad to see her like this.  Aside from a couple of colds, she hasn’t really been “sick” yet.  (There was that one episode on the Texas freeway, but I’m now even more convinced that was due to motion sickness and lack of sleep…)  This time, she was so pathetic…She is the most energetic kid I know, and for 2 days it seemed to take more energy than she was willing to expend just to sit (or lay) and watch “Playhouse Disney” all morning.  She took a 5 hour nap Tuesday afternoon (very much unlike her…but she was probably making up for the lost sleep the night before!).  She woke up with a moderate fever of about 103!  It has never been that high before!  So, I called her pediatrician (whom I love! He is well-worth every minute of the drive to Glendale!!), just to check in, and make sure we were doing everything we could/should for her.  He called me back within the hour, and said to make sure she was drinking lots of water, juice and/or Pedialyte.  He reassured me that this should only last 2-3 days.  I fully admit to being “one of those moms” who calls her child’s doctor at the slightest sign of illness!!  Paranoid?  Maybe.  She’s my baby, and if that’s what I am, then that’s fine with me.  She had some juice, a couple of crackers (which thankfully all stayed down!), another bath and some Tylenol (to hopefully reduce the fever), and it was back to bed at 7:30 – again unheard of for my little insomniac.

With Daddy back at work on Wednesday, and Hannah still running a high fever, and doing absolutely nothing all day, I sat with her and read while she watched Mickey Mouse.  I finished the biography of Elizabeth Prentiss for the second time, and started and finished Holiness, by Nancy Leigh DeMoss…Both great books!  I think I may post a review of both soon…if I have the time!

I am looking forward to “finding time,” because it means that things are getting back to normal.  She still has a low fever (99-100) today, but way more energy.  I has been hard to see my baby (okay, my little girl) so sick.  Hannah isn’t quite 100% yet, but I’m hoping it won’t be too much longer now.Â
